Level Sensors: A Complete Guide

Used to detect the level of substances that flow, including liquids, slurries, granular materials and powders, level sensors are an essential piece of kit for engineers.

Whether they come with an on/off signal, SPDT or a continuous signal, these devices have an important role to play in a number of industrial and commercial activities, including stocking, tank content, storage capacities and automated disposal.

Here at PVL we pride ourselves on offering the best in class level sensors that are suitable for any situation. Because of this, we are confident we have the right device for measuring a level within a specified range and determine the exact amount of a substance in a certain place.

Regardless of what the determining factor is in your decision - be it price, accuracy, appearance, response rate or ease of calibration - we have an answer and product for you.

Operating principles of electromagnetic level gauges
torrix level gauge

Electromagnetic level gauges use the force of a magnet in the float to change the electrical status of a reed switch. When the level of fluid increases, the float will move from B towards A. Once the magnet in the float reaches point A, the contact will close - a mechanical stop will usually control the movement of the float. If there is no stop in place, the contact will return to its original position when the magnet passes point B.

When the level of fluid drops, the float will move from A towards B, and as soon as the magnet reaches point A1 the contact opens.
The difference between points A and A1 is called the differential of the contact. This is normally very small, but it can be increased if
necessary using special contacts. To switch a contact from normally opened to normally closed or vice versa, you have to invert the float.

Choosing the right level sensor

We stock six different types of level sensor, so we are confident we can meet your needs.

Float level sensors
Flex-LC Float Level sensor

We offer a range of different float level sensors, depending on the chemical compatibility, temperature, specific gravity (density), viscosity and buoyancy of the liquid in question. Temperature-induced changes in specific gravity and viscosity will also affect the choice of float material.

For example, the Flex-LC Level Sensor With Reed Chain is very easy to install and is designed for
industrial use. It is available in various materials and its measured value can be via either the analog
output or the switching output.

Capacitive level sensors
LCC1 Capacitive level sensor

These level sensors are resistant to any changes in the atmosphere above the surface, while they are also partially resistant to the formation of foam on the surface. The output signal is not affected, even if the conductivity of the medium changes.

One example is the LCC1 Capacitive Level Sensor, which is designed for oil level detection in crankcases. It is ideal for difficult turbulent applications and it has an automatic recognition of different types of oil via reference capacitance. Ultrasound level sensors
Omni-L Ultrasound level sensor

By transmitting a series of ultrasonic pulses, these level sensors are able to propagate towards the level surface. The method is resistant to changes in the medium in certain parameters, including changes in dielectric constant and conductivity, but can only be used for advanced testing if there are harsh conditions in the atmosphere above the level.

The OMNI-L Ultrasonic Level Sensor is a perfect example of the sensors we stock. Designed by Honsberg, it consists of an ultrasound sensor, which, contact-free, determines the separations of media of different types, such as fluids, transported goods and solids.

Conductive level sensors
Condurix level sensor

If you need to evaluate the change in electrical resistance of the measured medium, conductive level sensors are just the product you need. They provide reliable, maintenance-free point level detection, while the devices are also robust.

Even in sticky or dirty liquids, the CONDURIX Potentiometric Level Sensor can deliver accurate information about the level of a tank. The small sensor head means the product can also be used in tight areas.

Radar level sensors
GRLM-70 Radar level sensor

Resistant against changes in the atmosphere, radar level sensors are able to measure the flight of the electromagnetic wave and set the value of the output signal appropriately. Coming with a low cost and in a range of different formats, we've got all of your needs covered.

One option is the GRLM-70 Radar Level Sensor, which has a guided wave and can take the level measurement of aggressive liquids. It also has a quick view display and can be directly mounted into containers, silos, vessels and reservoirs.

Hydrostatic level sensors
LK10 level sensor

Designed to deal with the formation of foam on the level surface, these level sensors are directly dependent on the density of the liquid.

Among the products we offer is the LK10 Level Sensor, which has a measuring range from 0 to 0.16 bar. Featuring a flush diaphragm with Parylene cover, this product is sure to stand the test of time. It also boasts accuracy of 0.35 per cent.
